Richard was fortunate to recieve Arts Council Funding in order to develop his writing skills. He created this video to share what he learned.
Frequent in Richard’s work is how shame forms a barrier to help. For this reason, he looks to speak to organisations and individuals so as to better understand the journey towards finding help. He finds it important to balance authenticity and entertainment in his work. Looking for warmth as well as drama. Striking this balance Richard works closely with a Dramaturg (script advisor) so as to ensure objectivity. Someone who can help him navigate the wealth of research learned. As a writer with Dyslexia Richard finds it useful to receive and take notes from someone who can provide objective feedback.
The rehearsed reading stage has proven a useful opportunity to test and explore the play with an audience. A platform to try new ideas and focus on how the play should develop. Richard’s work has received rehearsed readings at:
- Pulse Festival
- The Greenwich and Lewisham Young Peoples Theatre
- The Junction
- The Lakeside Theatre
- The Mercury Theatre
- Theatre 503
Richard’s research and writing time have been supported by Dame Judi Dench, Joanna Lumley, Dame Penelope Wilton, Dame Barbara Windsor and Arts Council England.
